Comment-to-DM automation watches the comments on your Instagram posts and reels, and when someone comments a keyword such as LINK or PRICE, it replies under the comment and sends that person a private message. It runs on Instagram’s private replies, which allow one direct message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.
How does comment-to-DM work?
- 1You publish a post or reel that says “Comment LINK and we’ll send it to you”.
- 2Someone comments “link”.
- 3The automation sees the keyword, posts a short public reply such as “Sent, check your DMs”, and sends the private message with the link.
- 4If the person writes back, you have a normal Instagram conversation and can carry on.
The public reply shows other people that asking works. The DM keeps the link, the price or the details private and starts a conversation you can sell in.
What are Instagram’s rules for private replies?
Meta’s documentation sets them (Meta: send a private reply to a commenter):
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| One message per comment | Only one private reply can be sent to the commenter |
| Within 7 days | The private reply must go within 7 days of the comment |
| Follow-ups need a reply | More messages only after the person responds, and within 24 hours of their response |
| Where it works | Comments on a professional account’s posts, reels, stories, Live and ads; on Live, only while the broadcast is on |
These rules are why comment-to-DM tools that use Meta’s official API are safe for your account, and why none of them can send a sequence of DMs to someone who never answered.
Ideas that work
The keyword is a promise, so the DM has to deliver exactly what the caption said.
- A boutique: “Comment PRICE for the price and sizes”. The DM has both, and a button to the product.
- A coaching institute: “Comment DEMO for a free demo class”. The DM has the batch timings and asks for the student’s class.
- A restaurant: “Comment MENU for this week’s menu”. The DM links to it.
- A real estate developer: “Comment SITE to book a site visit”. The DM asks which day suits.
- A creator or consultant: “Comment GUIDE for the free checklist”. The DM has the link.
How to set it up in Fliok
Instagram in Fliok is an add-on on the Basic plan and above (₹499/month in India, excluding 18% GST, or $9/month outside India). Tick it while you choose a plan, or add it any time from Settings → Plan & billing; see the add-on on the pricing page. You need an Instagram professional account (business or creator) linked to a Facebook Page, with access to messages allowed in the Instagram app’s settings.
- 1In the Instagram section of the sidebar, open Automations and choose Comment to DM: “Someone comments a word like LINK on your post or reel. Reply under it, and send them a DM.”
- 2Choose the post, or let it watch any post.
- 3Add the keywords, up to 20. They match whole words in any letter case, and you can require any of them or all of them.
- 4Write the public replies. Add up to five versions; Fliok uses them in turn, so a busy post does not fill with the same line.
- 5Write the DM, with an optional link button.
- 6Choose the extras: tag the contact, and answer Only each person’s first matching comment.
- 7Switch it on. New automations start switched off, and only admins create them.
Replies inside a comment thread, and comments older than 7 days, are left alone, as Instagram allows one DM per comment. The same section has four more automation types: DM keyword, Story reply, Story mention and Ice breaker.
Keyword automation or AI comment replies?
Fliok can also answer comments with Fliok AI. The two do different jobs.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Comment to DM automation | AI comment replies | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers | Comments with your keywords | New top-level comments in general |
| What it sends | The reply and DM you wrote | A reply written from your business facts |
| DM | Always, if you wrote one | When someone asks about price or details, if that option is on |
| Switched on | Per automation | On the AI assistant page; off until an admin turns it on |
AI comment replies skip spam, abuse and complaints, comments that are only emoji, tags or links, and comments it could not answer within six hours. They keep prices out of public replies unless your instructions allow them, and send at most 30 replies an hour for the workspace and 10 an hour on one post. When an automation answers a comment or a message, Fliok AI stays quiet for it.
What happens after the DM?
The conversation continues in Fliok’s Instagram inbox, with your team or Fliok AI replying while Instagram’s 24-hour window is open. Each new person becomes a lead in the CRM with Instagram as the source, so a comment can be followed all the way to a sale. More on the rest of the Instagram section in managing Instagram DMs and comments from Fliok.
Writing a DM that gets a reply
The DM is where the sale starts, so it deserves more thought than the caption.
- Deliver first. Put the link, the price or the guide in the first line. People commented to get it.
- One button. A Comment to DM message can carry one link button. Give it a short, plain title such as “See sizes” or “Book a visit”; Instagram allows 20 characters.
- Ask one easy question after you deliver: “Which size are you looking for?” A reply opens Instagram’s 24-hour window, and the conversation becomes yours to continue.
- Keep it short. A DM is limited to 1,000 bytes, which is fewer characters if you use emoji or Hindi script.
- Tag the contact with the campaign, such as diwali-reel, so you can see later which post brought which leads.
How do you know it is working?
Each person the automation reaches becomes a contact with your tag, and each conversation sits in the Instagram inbox. Compare how many commented, how many replied to the DM, and how many became leads that moved forward in the CRM. Insights for the post itself (reach, comments, saves) are in Fliok’s Instagram insights.
Mistakes to avoid
- A keyword people use anyway. “Price” on a post where everyone asks the price is fine; “nice” is not.
- A DM that does not deliver. If the caption promises a link, the DM needs the link, and the link has to work.
- Forgetting the conversation. People who reply to the DM are warm leads. Answer them within the 24-hour window.
- Too many automations on one post. One keyword per offer is clearer for the customer and for you.
